Project details

The challenge

The CELLFIL Project addresses the significant environmental and social impacts of fast fashion. Despite growing awareness and movements like #nofastfashion, the industry needs sustainable, versatile, durable, and recyclable textiles. The global filament market is dominated by non-renewable materials, contributing to long degradation times and ocean pollution. Bio-based filaments like Lyocell offer a solution, but require substantial investment and innovation across the value chain.

CELLFIL aims to introduce bio-based, biodegradable, and circular raw materials, creating a collaborative framework to replace synthetic fibers with eco-friendly alternatives, ultimately transforming the textile industry towards a circular economy.

The solution

The CELLFIL Project aims to revolutionize the textile industry by developing sustainable Lyocell filaments. These bio-based, biodegradable, and circular raw materials will replace synthetic fibers, addressing the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion. By creating a collaborative framework, CELLFIL will optimize the entire fabric production process, from raw material sourcing to final product development.

The project will demonstrate the versatility and added value of Lyocell filaments in over nine textile applications, involving major companies. This initiative will catalyze innovation across the value chain, defining business models and plans for market uptake by 2030, ultimately contributing to a European circular textile economy.

The main impacts

The CELLFIL Project aims to significantly reduce the environmental and social impacts of fast fashion by introducing sustainable Lyocell filaments. This initiative will replace non-renewable, long-degrading synthetic fibers, reducing landfill waste and ocean pollution. By creating a collaborative framework, CELLFIL will optimize the entire fabric production process, enhancing sustainability and functionality in over nine textile applications.

The project involves major companies, directly impacting over thousands jobs in Europe and countless SMEs. CELLFIL will catalyze innovation across the value chain, defining business models for market uptake by 2030, contributing to a European circular textile economy.
