AVANT Workshop: Antibiotic-Free Pork Production – Reality or Chimera?

On June 13th, the AVANT project hosted a workshop in Heraklion, Crete, bringing together approximately 90 participants to discuss the challenges and market potential of antibiotic-free pork production. Led by AVANT Coordinator Prof. Luca Gardabassi, the workshop provided a comprehensive update on the project as it advances into its fourth year, highlighting the importance of sustainable livestock management and innovative approaches to reducing antimicrobial use (AMU).

Key Interventions and Strategies

The AVANT project focuses on two key interventions, identified through pre-clinical studies and in line with regulatory requirements: Faecal Filtrate Transplantation (FFT) and a fibre-rich diet based on alfa-alfa. These interventions are being rigorously tested to determine their effectiveness in minimizing AMU without compromising animal health and welfare.

The project’s trials in the Netherlands (now completed), and ongoing trials in Denmark and France, are assessing the clinical efficacy and potential impact on AMU. The findings reveal the need for a holistic approach that combines innovative practices with improved farm and animal management strategies to reduce disease prevalence.

Stakeholder Perspectives

Various stakeholders bring different perspectives to the table when discussing pig welfare and antibiotic-free production. Consumers, often driven by price concerns, prioritize affordability over production practices. In contrast, farmers focus on cost-efficiency and productivity due to economic dependencies, while veterinarians, though well-informed, face limited influence in broader animal welfare conversations.

Economic and Policy Considerations

Jonathan Rushton from the University of Liverpool emphasized that while reducing AMU is technically feasible, it poses significant economic challenges. Shifts in management practices and necessary investments make antibiotic-free pork production a complex endeavor. Food companies, motivated by profit and market pressures, play a crucial role in shaping farming practices and have substantial political influence.

To achieve sustainable antibiotic-free pork production, supportive social, economic, and political environments are essential. Policy measures should be informed by both economic and technical factors to drive effective change.

Looking Forward

The AVANT workshop underscored the need for continued innovation and collaboration among stakeholders to achieve the shared goal of reducing AMU in pork production. By fostering discussions on economic viability, consumer behavior, and regulatory challenges, the workshop highlighted both the potential and the complexities involved in transitioning towards antibiotic-free production systems.
