Welcome to RTDS Group

RTDS Group is a Vienna based EU funding consulting and services company. We specialise in Horizon 2020 proposal preparation, project management and coordination, and post-project business planning. RTDS actively manages and assists EU funded Horizon 2020 projects in all steps: from the initial idea through to planning the market launch of resulting products or services.

This includes project coordination, financial administration, maximizing impact and exploitation of project results, comprehensive dissemination & exploitation strategies, support with open access publishing, business planning, development of digital communication tools, graphic design, PR strategies, website development, video production, objectively managing Intellectual Property (IP) and developing plans for exploitation of results.

Our vision

Going beyond the societal challenges of Horizon 2020, the mission-oriented research & innovation (R&I) initiatives are coined to be at the core of the next framework programme: Horizon Europe. Transformative initiatives should address concrete societal or economic problems experienced by all stakeholders including citizens, thus mission-oriented R&I initiatives require legitimacy and endorsement by the various stakeholders. On the other hand, research initiatives should be oriented towards faster scientific and technological impact.

RTDS Group was established with a mission to support scientists and innovators to move their research from the lab to the market. We complement your specific knowledge with the broader policy and socio-economic aspects required for R&I success and eventual market uptake of your results.

The assocation

RTDS Association is a non-profit Association (‘Verein’) implementing publicly-funded research and innovation projects under Horizon 2020 and related sub-programmes like the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI-JU). Our mission is to manage the non-technical aspects of the projects, so that researchers can focus on their research, involved companies can develop better products and services – and we do the rest!

Our usual EU project role is Work Package Leader for Dissemination, Exploitation and Communication (DEC). As ‘neutral’ partner, not claiming ownership of results, we objectively manage intellectual property and develop plans for commercialisation and communication in the interest of all partners. We can also take on the role as a Coordinator – managing all administrative aspects. Most of our projects are in the related fields of bio-economy, renewable energies, sustainable food, nutrition and agriculture as well as relevant applications of transport, ICT and social sciences.

RTDS (formally RTD Services) was the Austrian SME with the highest number (15) of project participations in FP7, three of them as coordinator.

RTDS Association is currently participating in five H2020 collaborative projects, two of them as coordinator, which were launched in May 2018. More information on the running and completed projects can be found here

RTDS Association is listed in the Austrian Association Register (Zentrales Vereinsregister, ZVR Number 465699086) with head office in Vienna and is a validated non-profit SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) by the European Commission with the PIC number 929551583.

Where it all started

As Austria had just joined the European Union, Stephen Webb was already an EU project manager at an SME during the fourth Framework Programme (FP4). During FP5 he worked with AVL List in Graz as proposal writer. Being an engineer with an MBA in marketing and innovation and an English native speaker in Austria, his destiny became clear: he would become the top EU project proposal writer in Austria and well known throughout Europe. Stephen relocated to Vienna, founded a consulting company to be service provider to the research community in time for the launch of the sixth Framework Programme, FP6.

After numerous successful proposals, RTDS was invited to become project partner for project management which soon was extended to include Dissemination and Exploitation. The company soon had its first employees and project implementation became a core competence beyond proposal writing. As the number of project participations grew, eventually RTDS was ready to lead projects as Coordinator, allowing researchers more time to do what they want – to research – and the companies involved can focus more on development on new products and services. All partners should do what they do best!

By the end of FP7 RTDS was the No 1 Austrian SME in FP7 project participation and is still a leader in H2020, well known all across Europe as being passionate and results driven, bringing together the best in research organisations and innovative companies – to move European research to the market.

What others say about us

RTDS delivered great support for development of the SUSFERT Horizon 2020 project. Starting with building of the consortium, filing in the proposal and coordinating the work among the partners. As a consortium member we benefit a lot from their experience and professional handling of the whole project, which was approved in May 2018.

Martin MayerCommercial Director, Timac Agro

I enjoyed working with RTDS on a BBI-JU proposal which was recently approved! Their expertise in project management and EU funding were crucial to bring our project idea to life and put together a winning proposal.

Georg Gübitz, Univ.Prof.Head of Department of Agrobiotechnology, IFA-Tulln, BOKU

RTDS have recently run two H2020 Impact Workshops with our researchers and grants office staff. Stephen, with his hands on approach, competently presents and brings to life concepts of stakeholder analysis, business models and value chains to help researchers better understand business perspectives essential for successful H2020 project proposals. Fully recommendable for higher success rates!

Torben Høøck HansenSenior Executive EU Liaison Officer

I have worked with RTDS for some years on EU proposals and my staff have attended their H2020 Impact workshops. Their professionalism and ability to integrate our research with industry needs was key to success in our recently approved Innovation Action. With RTDS, we have a competent partner for both Horizon proposals, training and H2020 project coordination!
